Diatoms in Art:
Below: Scientific Illustrations by Ernst Haeckel. This German scientist/artist was a zoologist who took artist license in ways scientific illustrators no longer can. His scientific illustrations inspired the advent of the art movement, Art Nouveau. These images are from the book, Kunstformen der Natur (Art forms of nature). His work dramatically bridged the gap between science and art. The last few photos are of student created diatoms from plastic water bottle bottoms.
Diatoms from Plastic:
Students will create diatoms from plastic water bottle bottoms. Students will draw intricate radial patterns on the cut off bottoms of water bottles to transform them into diatoms. These diatoms will be linked together to form a curtain.
Materials: permanent magic markers, mini hole punch, plastic water bottle bottoms, scissors and fishing line.
